Guidance Counsellor

Full-time, permanent, 40 hours per week, commencing Term 1, 2027

Mā te kahukura ka rere te manu — Adorn the bird with feathers so that it may fly.

At Marlborough Girls' College, our values underpin our mahi - Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga and Kotahitanga. Our purpose is that everyone learns and everyone thrives. We are looking for a skilled, warm and capable Guidance Counsellor to join our pastoral team and help our ākonga fly under their own power - building the insight, resilience and connection they need to thrive now and in the future.

This is a full-time (40 hours per week), permanent position commencing Term 1, 2027. For a suitably qualified and experienced candidate, this role may carry the Head of Guidance leadership responsibility, remunerated with 2 Middle Leadership Units (2MU) and 1 Middle Management Allowance (1MMA).

About the Role

You will provide professional counselling and pastoral support to students, whānau and staff, working within the NZAC Code of Ethics and the Teaching Council's Standards for the Teaching Profession (2026). You will help embed Te Whare Tapa Whā as our model of hauora, strengthen our relational and restorative culture, and give practical effect to the aspirations of mana whenua as described in Ngā Kōrero Tuku Iho.

What We Offer

You will join a very well-resourced Guidance team, including:

● Year level Deans

● A full-time Educational Psychologist

● Two other part-time Counsellors (combined, equivalent to a full-time role)

● A Hauora Leader

● Youth Worker and Kaiawhina

● Strong support and leadership from the Principal and Senior Leadership Team

You will also be joining a team with strong relationships with local agencies and organisations, including iwi, the Ministry of Education, New Zealand Police and a number of health and mental health agencies.

● Regular clinical supervision and funded continuing professional development

● A school genuinely committed to student wellbeing, restorative practice, and partnership with mana whenua

● The possibility of the Head of Guidance leadership allowance for the right candidate

What We're Looking For

● A recognised counselling qualification (Diploma or Masters level) and current or eligible membership of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC)

● Teaching Council registration, or eligibility for a Limited Authority to Teach (LAT)

● Experience working with young people in a school or comparable setting, including risk assessment and crisis response

● A strengths-based, capability-building approach that empowers students towards independence

● Cultural competence and a genuine commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership and mana whenua aspirations

● Strong relationship-building, communication and collaborative skills across a school community
